Watson Phillips Norman has a new website

On Monday 16th May we unleashed our brand new website.

Let us know what you think!

Fearing Facebook

These days, the seemingly irresistible rise of Facebook is constantly commented upon and fretted about. For instance, Susan Greenfield warned us that social networking could “infantilise” our minds, leaving our attention spans shattered and our sense of identify shaken. And Zadie Smith hypothesised that Facebook could be “flattening” us out, that it has the potential to homogenise and reduce multifaceted people into mutually exclusive categories (e.g. Single/It’s complicated/Looking for random play). Zadie argued that “when a human being becomes a set of data on a website like Facebook, he or she is reduced… we lose our bodies, our messy feelings, our desires, our fears.”

This clever viral film illustrates beautifully exactly how much Facebook seems to have become a part of so many lives worldwide.

However, despite the impressive statistics, I can’t ignore this nagging feeling that a backlash might be on its way. I recently removed most of my personal information from Facebook (location, gender, favourite films etc), set all the photos I am tagged in to “private” and removed my profile “wall”.

Although I still tweet, flickr and blog, I am happier in the knowledge that I have taken greater control of my online presence. I refuse to be “flattened”.
